SWABI: Five people, including a man and his two sons, drowned in the Indus River in separate incidents here on Friday, Rescue 1122 officials said.
They said a man and his two sons had come to the Hund area to celebrate Independence Day and enjoy bathing in the Indus River.
The rescue officials said when the man saw one of his sons drowning, he jumped into the river to save him. But he also drowned. They said his other son also jumped into the water to save his father and brother, but he was also swept away by strong currents.
Separately, two youths also drowned in the Indus River.
When contacted, Luqman Khan, Rescue 1122 Swabi spokesperson, told Dawn that among those drowned, one youth belonged to Charsadda district, while the man and his two sons hailed from Mardan district. Another youth belonged to the Yar Hussain area of Swabi.
The rescue official said that as soon as the drowning incidents were reported, teams of Rescue 1122 divers started a search for the bodies. He said that the rescue operation continued throughout the day, but the bodies were still untraced.
