KARACHI: The administrative judge of the antiterrorism courts on Saturday remanded two suspects in police custody in a case pertaining to a clash and firing between two groups of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan at their Bahadurabad headquarters.
The police produced suspects Zeeshan Habib and Azhar alias Lamba before the court and sought their custody for questioning.
Representing the detained suspects, Advocate Hassan Sabir argued that the police have wrongly invoked the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 in the present case as the offences did not fall within the ambit of anti-terror law.
He also submitted that both suspects were suffering from various ailments and needed urgent treatment.
The investigating officer submitted that the clash took place among workers at the party’s headquarters in Bahadurabad on Aug 2 and they had also resorted to firing, which caused fear and a sense of insecurity among the people residing in the neighbourhood.
After hearing both sides and examining the record, the administrative judge handed over the suspects in police custody on physical remand till Aug 11 and directed the IO to produce them at the next hearing along with a progress report.
The New Town police had registered a case and named the two detained suspects along with 20-25 unidentified individuals in the FIR registered under Sections 324 (attempted murder) and 188 (disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 (punishment for acts of terrorism) of the ATA.
