ISLAMABAD: Over 66,000 motorists were fined for violating traffic rules in the capital during the last 30 days, Police officials told Dawn on Wednesday.

The traffic violators included 20 government officers, 14 foreigners, 13 army officers, 11 each diplomats and politicians, seven celebrities, and an official from judiciary. Besides, 24 refugees were also caught while violating the traffic rules.

They further said during the period the police also impounded 8,487 vehicles over the violations. Besides, 399 cases were also registered against the motorists for violating the traffic rules on roads.

Out of the total, the Islamabad Traffic Police issued 10,566 tickets over lane violations, 10,241 over wrong parking, 6,345 over using fancy and unpatented registration plate, 4,301 over wrong way and careless driving, 3,854 over overloading, 3,643 over not wearing seat belts, and 3,329 over signal violations.

Likewise, 1,184 fine tickets were issued over using mobile phone while driving, 410 over driving vehicles without registration plate, 358 over using tinted glasses, 348 over defective lights, 316 over stopping vehicle on Zebra Crossing and Stop Line, 287 over driving without license, 244 over using HD and High Beam lights.

Similarly, 191 fine tickets were issued over driving vehicles without fitness certificate, 115 over heavy sound silencers, 47 to under age drivers, 26 over using pressure and musical horns, 16 tickets to smoke emitting vehicles, six over overcharging by Public Service Vehicles. The rest other fine tickets were issued over other different traffic violations.

Besides, issuing 10,566 fine tickets over lane violation, the ITP got impounded 1,566 vehicles at the police station, on which the violation was committed. In last one week, 4358 drivers were caught while committing the lane violations and 463 vehicles were impounded.

Most of the lane violation was committed at Expressway and the number of fine tickets issued over it was 978, besides, 166 vehicles were impounded during the last one week.

Nine vehicles of the ITP patrol at Expressway to keep an eye on the traffic rules violations, especially lane violations. The vehicles are six electric SUV-Crossovers, an SUV-Double Cabin and two motorcycles.

Besides, static duties of officials at green belts of Expressway – Kuri Road, Dhoke Kalakhan and Koral are in place.

Likewise, issuing 10,241 fine tickets over wrong parking, the ITP got impounded 625 vehicles at the police station, on which the violation was committed. In last one week, 238 drivers were caught while committing the violations and 83 vehicles were impounded.

Most of the wrong parking was committed at F-6, F-7, F-10, F-11, G-9, I-8 and Blue Area.
