LOWER DIR: The district administration on Monday reviewed preparations to tackle the growing incidents of wildfires amid the ongoing heat wave.
Deputy Commissioner Basharat Ahmad chaired a meeting to this effect, which was also attended by officials from the district administration, forest department, Rescue 1122, police, Civil Defence, local government and tehsil municipal administrations.
A series of wildfires have been reported in various parts of the district over the past two weeks, including Sarai Payeen, Barcharai Talash, Danwa, Malakand Payeen, Manogay, Anangoro Khwar, Ramora Adenzai, Haji Abad, Sar Pato, Tangay Timergara and Siyar.
Owing to mountainous terrain and inaccessible routes, firefighters have faced problems reaching the affected areas.
The participants reviewed the preparatory measures, the availability of firefighting equipment and inter-agency coordination mechanisms.
The deputy commissioner directed authorities to activate the divisional forest fire management committee and submit a report on forest fire incidents reported in Lower Dir over the past three years.
He instructed the forest department officials to begin clearing dry vegetation in high-risk areas and strengthen fire lines to help prevent the spread of blazes.
The DC also ordered identification of vulnerable locations, including forests, tourist sites and markets, and called for enhanced preventive measures. Village defence committees in sensitive areas were asked to remain vigilant.
Rescue 1122 was directed to organise specialised firefighting training sessions for Civil Defence personnel, welfare organisations and local communities. The Civil Defence department was also tasked with registering volunteers.
The police were instructed to ensure strict enforcement of Section 144, while the forest department, local government authorities and TMAs were asked to display awareness banners in markets and tourist destinations.
The deputy commissioner urged clerics to raise awareness about forest fire prevention and wildlife protection during Friday sermons. He also called for public awareness campaigns through social media and community representatives.
Mr Basharat stressed the importance of close coordination among the forest department, Rescue 1122, police, local government and Civil Defence to ensure a swift response to emergencies.
The meeting also reviewed fire safety measures in markets, commercial centres and public buildings, with officials instructed to inspect electrical systems and address hazards such as faulty wiring and overloading.
