7 missing after accident near Fairy Meadows

GILGIT: Seven people, including six tourists and a local driver, went missing after their jeep plunged into a deep ravine on Sunday near the popular tourist destination of Fairy Meadows, authorities said.

The accident occurred around 3pm when the vehicle, bearing registration number GLT-1335, veered off the road and fell into a gorge in the Diamer district, Gilgit-Baltistan police said in a statement.

The missing driver was identified as Ziaullah, a resident of Dareel in the Diamer district. The passengers included four tourists from Punjab and two from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, identified by police as Ali and Sajjad.

Police, rescue teams and local volunteers rushed to the scene to launch a search-and-recovery operation. Authorities are working to retrieve the victims from the rugged terrain and the recovered bodies will be transported to the Regional Headquarters Hospital in Chilas for further procedures.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
