DUBLIN: Chinelle Henry’s all-round performance helped West Indies beat Pakistan 25 runs on Friday as they recorded their second consecutive win in the women’s T20 International tri-series here at the Castle Avenue ground.
West Indies started off in the event with an emphatic eight-wicket victory against Ireland on Thursday.
Chasing 200, Pakistan were restricted to 174-8 in the allotted 20 overs through cameos from Aliya Riaz (37), Saira Jabeen (30) and a 14-ball 27 from Fatima Sana.
Henry was named player-of-the-match for her 17-ball 33 not out — laced with four fours and a six — while batting at No.6. Later, the medium-pacer excelled with the leather as well removing Muneeba Ali and Ayesha Zafar within the first four overs to restrict Pakistan early.
Electing to bat first, the West Indies breezed to 61-1 in powerplay as captain Hayley Matthews cracked 40 off 20 balls with the help of nine fours.
Pakistan struck thrice in a space of 18 balls from the end of fifth over to 7.4-over mark as Diana Baig got Matthews, Nashra Sundhu cleaned up Deandra Dottin (17) and Rameen Shamim got the better of Qiana Joseph (four) to leave West Indies 66-3.
At this juncture, Stafanie Taylor (39 off 23 balls, four fours, two sixes) and Jahzara Claxton (17 off 14) bailed them out with a 30-ball 54-run stand which was broken by Nashra who overtook her fellow left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal (73 wickets) to go third on the all-time leading wicket-takers list for Pakistan in women’s T20 Internationals.
Rameen backed up Nashra with another wicket in the 14th over with West Indies 122-5 when top-scorer Jannillea Glasgow (42 off 25, seven fours) and Henry collected 65 valuable runs to take their team to a solid 199-6 in 20 overs.
In reply, Saira (30 off 19, six fours) took the attack to West Indies after Pakistan were reduced to 28-3 inside four overs as she struck Ashmini Munisar for four boundaries in the last over of powerplay before falling on the last ball with scorecard reading 52-4.
Iram Javed (24 off 20) shared a stand of 32 with Rameen Shamim (18 off 16) and then 28 with Aliya Riaz (37 off 28, eight fours) to keep Pakistan in the hunt. Rameen and Iram were both run out as Aliya and Fatima turned aggressive in a 17-ball 27-run stand.
With 59 needed off the last 18 balls, Fatima struck two sixes and a four in a space of four balls across 18th and 19th overs but eventually fell after Pakistan required 32 off the final over. Apart from Henry’s two for 13, Shawnisha Hector dismissed two batters, while Munisar and Claxton picked up a wicket each.
Pakistan next face hosts Ireland in Dublin on Sunday.
