SWABI: A 17-year-old girl allegedly ended her life by jumping into the Pehur Canal in the Jhanda area here on Saturday, police and Rescue 1122 officials said.

Earlier, it was learnt that she had drowned in the canal, but it transpired later that she jumped into the canal. The cause behind her ‘suicide’ could not be known.

However, police officials said that the girl had developed differences with her family over some issues.

Rescue 1122 officials said they launched efforts to find the body when they learnt about the incident.

Though the rescue personnel were engaged in searching for the body, it was yet to be recovered.

Meanwhile, the price of wheat flour has increased by Rs300 per 20-kilogramme bag in the district.

Consumers and traders said that before Eidul Azha, a 20kg bag of flour was available at Rs2,400 and now it was selling at Rs2,700.

They maintained that it was surprising that the prices had gone up at a time when the wheat harvesting season had just ended

They said that although Punjab had lifted the ban on wheat movement, the commodity’s prices had increased.

Also, a fire broke out on the Utla mountains in Gadoon Amazai mountainous belt, which engulfed a considerable area.

The firefighters from the Rescue 1122 started extinguishing the fire as soon as their control room received the information.
