KARACHI: More than 30 people were rescued while around 10 motorcycles were damaged when a fire broke out in a commercial-cum-residential building in the Buffer Zone area on Saturday, rescue officials said.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaan Ul Haseeb Khan told Dawn that the fire erupted in a shop at Erum Shopping Centre due to an electrical short circuit. The blaze spread and engulfed two adjacent shops.

He said the shops were located along the building’s corridor, where residents and shopkeepers had parked their motorcycles. As a result, more than 10 motorcycles were damaged in the fire.

Smoke spread from the corridor into the residential section of the high-rise building.

Mr Khan said rescue personnel used a ladder to evacuate several flats and safely rescue around 30 to 35 people.

No injuries were reported. Two fire tenders brought the blaze under control.
