LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party Information Secretary Faiza Malik has demanded the immediate abolition of capacity charges and what she termed “unnecessary and hidden taxes” imposed on electricity bills, saying the burden on consumers has become unbearable.
In a press release issued on Sunday, she said a detailed review of electricity bills revealed that various “secret taxes” were being collected from the public quietly and cleverly under different heads.
She urged the government to provide real relief to over 150 million people instead of favouring a few specific individuals or institutions. “The government should win the hearts of the people by freeing them from expensive electricity and earning their prayers,” she said.
Faiza Malik said soaring electricity tariffs and capacity charges had pushed industries, businesses and domestic consumers into severe difficulties. She added that business activities were suffering, industrial operations had slowed down due to costly electricity, and the public was struggling under the increasing financial burden.
She called on the government to take immediate practical measures to reduce electricity tariffs and abolish capacity charges in order to support the economy and provide relief to the masses.
