LAHORE: Responding to an appeal of Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) organised a protest demonstration on The Mall, alongside nationwide protests against the recent increase in inflation, petroleum prices, and electricity tariffs.
The protest was led by Ziauddin Ansari, while Liaqat Baloch attended as the chief guest and addressed the gathering. JI Lahore Secretary Azhar Bilal, party leaders, youth activists, district representatives, workers, and a large number of citizens also participated.
Protesters carried placards and banners condemning the government’s economic policies and demanding the immediate withdrawal of petroleum levy taxes, effective measures to control inflation, and urgent public relief.
Addressing the gathering, speakers said the government, under conditions imposed by the IMF, was placing an increasing financial burden on the public through inflation and excessive taxation.
They described the recent hike in fuel and electricity prices as unjust and accused the ruling elite of enjoying privileges while ordinary citizens suffered economic hardship.
The speakers also alleged that billions of rupees were being transferred to powerful groups through agreements with the independent power producers (IPPs).
They demanded a review of all such agreements and called for future contracts to be made in the public interest.
Criticising the recent electricity relief measures, the leaders termed the introduction of the “QR Code” scheme after imposing heavy taxes as insufficient and misleading.
The JI leadership warned that if the government failed to reduce the fuel and electricity prices and provide immediate relief, the party would launch a nationwide protest campaign, including shutter-down and wheel-jam strikes, after Eid. They said the final announcement would be made by Hafiz Naeemur Rehman.
The party leadership reiterated that Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan would continue its struggle for public rights and could intensify protests, including demonstrations outside the chief minister’s house and the Punjab Assembly.
