Seven Pakistanis reach quarters at Asian junior squash

ISLAMABAD: Maintaining their impressive sta­rt, seven Pakistan players have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 33rd Asian Junior Individual Squash Championships being held in Panzhihua, China.

According to the information made available here by the Pakistan Squash Federation on Thursday, Mohammad Mustafa Khan secured a convincing 3-1 victory over India’s Aaron Arambhan to make the last-eight stage of the U-13 category.

After winning the first two games 11-6 and 11-9, Mustafa briefly lost momentum in the third game that he lost 9-11 before regaining control to clinch the fourth 11-6 and seal the match in 33 minutes.

In the U-15 event, Ahmad Rayyan Khalil of Pakistan outclassed Nok Yi Brady 11-3, 11-6, 11-4 in just 16 minutes. Ahmad’s compatriot Mohammad Sohail Adnan also produced a commanding performance to blank Dhruv Johri of India 11-6, 13-11, 11-3 in 31 minutes.

Pakistan’s dominance continued in the U-17 event where Mohammad Umair Arif outplayed Bangladesh’s Muhammad Raihan Mohd 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 in 25 minutes. Nauman Khan, another Pakistani contestant, also moved into the quarter-finals after overcoming Hong Kong’s Chun Hin Ho 11-6, 11-2, 13-11 during a 38-minute battle.

Abdullah Nawaz of Pakistan comfortably downed Macau’s Ka Hei Lei 11-3, 11-9, 11-4 in 29 minutes to book his place in the last eight of the U-19 event.

Among girls, Mahnoor Ali fought brilliantly in a thrilling five-game encounter against compatriot Sehrish Ali in the U-15 category.After losing the opening game 7-11, Mahnoor bounced back strongly to win the next two games 11-9 and 11-3. Sehrish levelled the match by taking the fourth game 11-6, but Mahnoor held her nerves in the decider to win 11-7 and complete a 3-2 victory in 43 minutes.
