BAHAWALPUR: Thousands of government school teachers, including a large number of women, staged a protest demonstration for pay raise, payment of their arrears and restoration of their pension and other facilities in Lodhran on Wednesday.

According to Lodhran Punjab Teachers Union President Rana Muhammad Farooq Khan, the rally was taken out from the Lodhran district council hall.

He said that they marched on the DC office, where leaders addressed the participants.

Speakers said they would continue their protest till the acceptance of their demands.

EID PLAN: The Bahawalpur Waste Management Company (BWMC) has announced its waste management plan for Eidul Azha and declared to turn the city into a “zero waste city”.

BWMC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Naeem Akhtar said that over 100,000 biodegradable waste bags along with brochures were being distributed among citizens for waste collection during the three days of Eid.

He said that over 1,000 sanitation workers along with over 150 vehicles, including loader rickshaws, would be deployed at different locations for waste collection.

In addition, he said that awareness camps had been established at important intersections for the assistance of citizens to dispose of sacrificial waste during Eid days.

MOCK EXERCISE: Bahawalpur Rescue 1122 organised a mock exercise at the Yazman Road Canal on Tuesday to prepare for any emergency situation during the up-coming monsoon season.

The officials of all the relevant government departments including health, police, civil defence, irrigation and others participated in the exercise.

On the occasion, District Emergency Officer Baqir Hussain briefed Bahawalpur Deputy Commissioner Syed Hassan Raza about the preparations and also displayed practical demonstrations to meet emergencies. He told the Dc that the emergency station had ample equipment, including boats and life-saving jackets, for any emergency situation arising during rainy days.

ACCIDENT: A young motorcyclist was killed in an accident near the Noorpur Pully on the Bahawalpur-Ahmedpur highway.

According to Rescue 1122, biker Abdul Qayyum fell on the road after hitting a passer-by and a passing trailer crushed him. He was shifted to the Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH) in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Noorpur Police registered a case against the fleeing trailer driver, who was yet to be arrested.
