Intense heat, dusty winds sweep across Karachi

KARACHI: Mercury surged to 40 degrees Celsius in the metropolis on Wednesday amid dusty winds blowing at 24 kilometres per hour, the Met Office said.

It said that the strong winds started right after the sunrise and continued almost throughout the day.

The southwest winds blowing at 24km per hour with low count of humidity kept the weather conditions dry.

“The city recorded maximum temperature at 40.1 degrees with 34 per cent humidity that kept the weather conditions dry unlike Monday and Tuesday,” said an official.

“The Karachiites experienced intense heat accompanied by strong winds and dust, creating harsh weather conditions across the city. At times the winds reaching 35 to 40 kilometres per hour, adding to the dry and dusty atmosphere.”

For Thursday, he said, the weather is expected to remain hot and dry in most districts of the province.

However, partly cloudy conditions are likely in Ghotki and surrounding areas, where thunderstorm activity may occur at a few locations, added the official.

According to the Met Office, temperatures soared across several Sindh cities on Wednesday with Hyderabad, Sukkur and Mohenjo-Daro recording a scorching 45 degrees, while Mithi and Nawabshah touched 43 degrees amid intense heatwave conditions across the region.
