Misuse of medicines
THE rising trend in Pakistan of using GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglu-tide and tirzepatide, for cosmetic weight-loss is seriously alarming. In a setting where access to medicines is not strictly regulated, many people are able to obtain these drugs without proper medical supervision. This not only increases the risk of side-effects due to inappropriate use, but also means that essential clinical evaluation is often overlooked.
What is more worrying is that this rising demand of GLP-1 receptor agonists for cosmetic use may contribute to shortages, making it harder for patients with genuine medical needs to have access to these medications. In a country where health-care resources are already limited, such trends can have serious consequences. Treating a prescription drug as a quick solution for weight-loss reflects a broader issue that needs attention. There is a need for stricter regulation along with awareness about the grave risks of unsupervised use.
