Officials and residents said unidentified men attacked Saidullah with automatic weapons in Tarkho area of Loi Mamund tehsil as he was on routine duty in a bazaar.

They said the firing left the constable critically wounded.

Deputy superintendent of police Niaz Mohammad told reporters that the 37-year-old policeman was rushed to the district headquarters hospital in Khar but he succumbed to his injuries.

He said a team from the Loi Mamund police station in the Laghari area rushed to the firing site to “chase attackers”.

“An investigation into the attack has been launched,” he said.

The policeman’s body was later dispatched to his native Kitkoot area in Lowi Mamund tehsil for burial after his funeral prayer was held at the police lines ground.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack that occurred days after the killing of police constable Nazimullah in a mountainous area of Barang tehsil.

Meanwhile, a bomb blast damaged a house in Salarzai tehsil of Bajaur tribal district late on Sunday night, police and residents said on Monday.

The incident occurred in the Thangi area when a bomb planted by miscreants at the gate of influential elder Haji Amanullah Khan’s hujra went off.

The police and residents told Dawn that the blast destroyed the gate and damaged the windows and doors of the hujra and houses.

However, no damage to public life was reported.

A police team collected evidence for investigations meant to identify culprits and their motive.

No one has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Meanwhile, a policeman was injured during an exchange of gunfire between police and militants in Bannu district on Monday, police said.

They said police personnel encountered armed militants near Khargi Hotel Chowk on Link Road, triggering an intense firing, which left police constable Rahatullah Khan injured. He was immediately shifted to the Khalifa Gul Nawaz Hospital.

Police said the operation against terrorists was under way, while additional security personnel were called in for the action.

Meanwhile, additional deputy commissioner general Habibullah Wazir survived a terrorist attack in Bannu, an official said on Monday.

He said that the official bulletproof vehicle of the ADC came under intense gun attack near Dhambi Bridge on the Link Road that connects Bannu district with the Peshawar-Karachi Indus Highway within the limits of Domel Police Station on Sunday evening.

“The government official and his guards remained safe in the attack,” he said. The vehicle was partially damaged.

The official said Mr Wazir was on the way to his native town from Bannu city when around a dozen armed men signalled his vehicle to stop. However, the driver sped away the vehicle, prompting the armed men to attack. At a small distance ahead, another group of armed miscreants sprayed the vehicle with bullets.

The official said as the vehicle was bulletproof, the ADC and his guard and driver remained unhurt in the attack.
