Absolute irony

IN the hallowed chambers of the Sindh Assembly, where the echoes of ‘democratic deliberation’ ostensibly resonate with the spirit of justice, a profound travesty unfolded recently, one that pierces the veil of Pakistan’s professed Islamic identity. A resolution tabled by a Hindu legislator sought to proscribe the sale and purchase of liquor across the province, which, according to the mover, was bringing a bad name to the Hindu community.

The resolution, rooted in the immutable edicts of the religion, was met not with solemn affirmation, but with vehement repudiation by people’s representatives. The speaker consigned the matter to the caprice of a vote, and the resolution was summarily rejected by a majority in the House. This episode is much more than a mere legislative footnote.
