Man held for ‘raping’ three minor daughters

BAHAWALPUR: Fateh Shah police in Vehari district arrested a man on charge of raping his three minor daughters at Chak 41/KB, Burewala, on Friday.

District Police PRO Adnan Tariq told Dawn by cell phone that the suspect was arrested after registration of an FIR on the complaint of his wife on May 5.

She alleged that her husband had been raping their three daughters who were 14, 11 and 9 years old for the last six months. He would commit the crime in her absence from home. The daughters disclosed it to their mother on May 3.

The police spokesperson said the police arrested the suspect and initiated the process of medical examination and DNA tests of three victims.

ENCOUNTER: The Uch Sharif police in Bahawalpur district claimed to have arrested a criminal in injured condition after an encounter.

According to a police spokesperson, a patrol team deployed at Kicks Mor spotted three suspects on a motorcycle and signalled them to stop for identification. Instead, the motorcyclists allegedly opened fire on a police party and attempted to flee from the scene.

The police officials chased the fleeing suspects, who in a state of confusion and fear lost control over the motorcycle and crashed against a roadside tree.

When all three fell from the motorcycle, two of them managed to flee in the nearby fields under the cover of darkness while the third was arrested in injured condition.

He was identified as Muhammad Tariq, who was wanted by police in a number of cases of robbery.

A snatched motorcycle and illegal arms were recovered from the suspect.

ARTS COUNCIL: The Punjab government approved an additional sum of Rs560m for completion of the under-construction building of Bahawalpur Arts Council.

This was stated by Commissioner Irfan Ali Kathia who inspected the building on Friday.

On the occasion, Director Arts Council Dr Nasir Hameed told the commissioner that the building had already cost Rs450m and after completion, it would play an important role in the promotion of cultural activities in the region.

It may be recalled that the building was under-construction for the last several years and the delay was caused due to paucity of funds.

ACCIDENT: A minor girl was killed by a speeding bus at Khairpur Tamewali.

According to Rescue 1122, Alishba (7) was crossing the road along with her mother when the speeding bus going to Hasilpur from Bahawalpur knocked down her. Her body was shifted to THQ Hospital, Khairpur Tamewali.

Traffic police arrested the driver and impounded his bus.
