Cystic fibrosis clinic inaugurated at LGH
LAHORE: Modern diagnostics, genetic testing and integrated treatment are indispensable for effective fight against complex genetic disorders like cystic fibrosis, Post Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI) Principal Prof Dr Muhammad Farooq Afzal has said.
He was addressing the inauguration ceremony of a dedicated cystic fibrosis clinic and an awareness seminar organised by the Department of Pediatrics at Lahore General Hospital (LGH) here on Thursday.
The event was attended by renowned medical experts, including Indus Hospital Karachi Head of Pediatrics Prof Dr Muhammad Fareeduddin, LGH MS Prof Dr Faryad Hussain and other senior medical faculty members.
Prof Afzal said that by providing timely diagnosis and proper guidance to parents, the quality of life for affected children could be significantly improved. He highlighted that the new clinic would provide advanced diagnostic facilities, genetic counselling, specialised physiotherapy and nutritional support.
He added that the center aims to not only provide treatment but also to train parents in home-based care so they can effectively manage their children’s health.
He highlighted that the Punjab government and Health Department were committed to providing world-class medical facilities and the establishment of this clinic at LGH was a crucial step in that mission.
During the seminar, medical experts explained that cystic fibrosis primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, with symptoms including chronic cough, frequent chest infections and stunted growth.
Dr Ghani discussed the vital role of genetic testing, while Prof Fareeduddin shared insights into international advancements in gene modulator drugs.
