SAHIWAL: Policeman Zahid Sukhera, the alleged killer of his landlady Rehana Akhter, had hired two shooters who murdered the 55-year-old widow and schoolteacher in Pakpattan police jurisdiction on April 21.

A wireless operator with the Punjab patrolling police, Sukhera died of heart attack during investigation.

Pakpattan District Police Officer Javed Chadhar said Sukhera, through a friend Saeed hired a facilitator and two shooters by paying them Rs300,000.

He said Sukhera, tenant of Rehana Akhter for 12 years, allegedly wanted to seize her house worth Rs8m, and to escape a long-standing loan of Rs2m he owed to the widow.

City Police SHO Ashiq Abid, the lead investigator, said the police arrested facilitator Saeed, shooters Sardar Ali and Muhammad Usman, Sukhera’s wife Rameen, car driver Gulam Ali and others.

The shooters first shot dead Rehana and then burnt her body with acid.

Sources confirmed that the Regional Anti-Terrorism Court, Sahiwal, granted seven-day physical remand of seven suspects, including two women.

Accident: A Rescue 1122 official lost his life in a road accident while crossing the Lahore-Khanewal national highway near Yousafwala Adda late on Tuesday night.

Eyewitnesses said Lead Fire Rescuer Muhammad Saeed (40) was struck by a speeding car and sustained a fatal head injury with multiple fractures and died on the spot.

As per reports, Saeed completed his shift at 10pm and was returning home. A colleague gave him a lift and dropped him off at the Yousafwala Adda on the N-5 national highway.

While crossing the road, he was hit by a car, whose occupants fled the scene. The vehicle was later found abandoned a few kilometres away after breaking down.

It was learnt that the car had been rented allegedly by a few students from Okara. After the accident, they contacted the rental company to collect the vehicle and fled, leaving it on the roadside.

Yousafwala Police seized the vehicle and launched a search for the involved students.

Meanwhile, Saeed’s funeral prayers were offered in his native village 65/5-L with full protocol, attended by senior Rescue 1122 officers, family, friends and a large number of local villagers.

A floral wreath was laid on his grave in tribute.

Saeed is survived by his widow and three daughters.
