KARACHI: The Awami National Party (ANP) on Wednesday called for unity among all political parties to resolve Karachi’s problems.

“We love all communities, including Urdu-speaking people. Let brotherhood prevail in Karachi,” Sindh ANP President Shahi Syed told a press conference here.

Demanding an empowered local government system, he said that Karachi had turned into a city of problems.

“Although the PPP is in power in Sindh and its mayor heads the city, Karachi’s issues remain unresolved,” he said, adding that water was being supplied by tanker in the city, not through taps.

He said that corruption plagued education, health, electricity, traffic and every department. “There should be across-the-board, transparent accountability,” he demanded.

He also urged the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government to focus on provincial issues instead of seeking the release of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s founder Imran Khan.

He expressed concern over rising terrorism nationwide and deteriorating law and order in KP.

He strongly condemned the killing of religious scholar Maulana Sheikh Idris, saying the incident raised serious questions about the state’s writ.

The ANP leader lauded the armed forces for defeating India and for the success of Maarka-i-Haq.

He said illegal Afghan nationals should be deported, but Pakhtuns must not be targeted under any pretext. “All issues, including those with Afghanistan, should be resolved through dialogue,” he added.
