From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1951: Seventy-five years ago: Starvation

PATNA: Nearly 400,000 Bharati are reported to be on the verge of starvation in the Madhubani district of Bihar, according to two National Congress members who have just completed a fortnight’s tour of the district. They urged the Bihar Government today [May 5] to declare the district a famine area and organise immediate relief. The Congressmen, Pandit Harinath Misra, Secretary of the Bihar Legislature Congress Party, and Jananinandan Singh, President of the District Municipal Board, said a quarter of the landless labourers in the district were too weak to work.

[Meanwhile, according to a special correspondent,] King Farouk of Egypt will marry today [May 6] Miss Narriman Sadek, 17, “an exquisite flower of the Egyptian society”. The King is 31 and is celebrating the sixteenth anniversary of his accession to the throne today.

The wedding will take place at Kubba Palace, winter residence of the Egyptian monarch in the outskirts of Cairo. The King and the Queen will drive in State from Kubba Palace to Abdin Palace, the Cairo residence of the King. Palace ceremonies will be simple, as the King desires so.
