PPP allowed to be party to plea on stray dog attacks

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday allowed the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) to become a party to a petition related to the rising incidents of attacks by stray dogs.

Justice Khalid Ishaq heard an application filed by PPP Animal Welfare Wing President Zoya Mir.

Barrister Maqsooma Zahra Bokhari appeared on behalf of the applicant and referred to laws relating to the protection of animal rights. She requested that the PPP be allowed to join the proceedings in view of the public importance of the matter.

The judge accepted the request and allowed the applicant to become a necessary party in the main petition filed by the Young Doctors’ Association (YDA).

Representing the YDA, Advocate Azhar Siddique argued that rabid and stray dogs should be culled.

He said the government’s efforts for vaccination of dogs were inadequate.

He alleged that the authorities failed to take effective measures to curb such incidents.

The judge adjourned further hearing till May 20.
