From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1951: Seventy-five years ago: Pakistan Standard Time
KARACHI: With a view to making time in the two wings of the country conform to geographical position, the Government of Pakistan have decided that Pakistan Standard Time will be 4-1/2 hours and 6 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time in West and East Pakistan respectively, says a Press note issued on Saturday [April 28]... . It adds: This will be introduced throughout Pakistan with effect from Oct 1, 1951. At present it is 5-1/2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time in both wings of the country.
[Meanwhile, according to news agencies from Lahore,] Syed Sajjad Zaheer, Secretary of the Pakistan Communist party was arrested in Lahore yesterday [April 27]. The Punjab Police had been on the lookout for Syed Sajjad Zaheer, and recently had considerably intensified its efforts. A reward of Rs 5,000 was also announced for information leading to his arrest.
The arrest of the Communist Party’s Chief is stated to have been effected in a house in the new “abadi” of Multan Road at about 4 30 p.m. yesterday. During the last few days, the police had carried out a number of house searches and also arrested some persons in the same connection.
