LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution commending Pakistan’s political and military leadership for what it described as a “highly effective diplomatic role” in promoting ceasefire efforts between the USA and Iran, and fostering peace amid a tense international situation, while also recommending the country’s prime minister and army chief for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The resolution paid tribute to key figures, including Nawaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir. It expressed “deep appreciation and pride” over their leadership in navigating complex global challenges.

According to the resolution, their “unwavering leadership, exceptional foresight, and tireless efforts” have elevated Pakistan’s standing in the international community. It credited them with skillfully addressing intricate diplomatic challenges and helping avert a potentially devastating regional conflict through prudent strategy and sustained engagement.

The assembly also acknowledged the constructive role played by international actors, including the leadership of the United States and Iran, for prioritising dialogue, restraint, and diplomacy in efforts to reduce tensions and maintain global peace.

Highlighting specific contributions, the resolution stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s “statesman-like leadership” and commitment to national interest, Ishaq Dar’s diplomatic acumen in effectively presenting Pakistan’s position globally, and Field Marshal Asim Munir’s “strong, professional, and courageous military leadership” collectively led to what it termed a “historic achievement.”

The House strongly recommended that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of their role in promoting peace and enhancing Pakistan’s global stature.

The resolution concluded with a reaffirmation of Pakistan’s commitment to peace, development, and prosperity, pledging continued support for initiatives aimed at ensuring lasting stability in the region.

Emphatic show of support

The Punjab Assembly session witnessed an emphatic show of support from treasury members, who hailed Pakistan’s political and military leadership for what they termed a “historic diplomatic success,” following the resolution.

During the proceedings, MPA Rana Muhammad Arshad said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir were playing a “historic role” at a critical time. He stressed that Pakistan could not remain a silent spectator amid tensions involving Iran and Israel, claiming that Islamabad had contributed to bringing global rivals to the negotiating table after decades.

In a strongly worded remark, he argued that the Nobel Peace Prize should go to Pakistan’s leadership rather than US President Donald Trump.

Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman told the House that Pakistan had achieved “an unprecedented feat in world history” by facilitating dialogue among major powers. He claimed that global actors had been brought together after decades and credited Pakistan with helping avert a third world war through ceasefire efforts. He expressed optimism that a final ceasefire announcement by world powers could emerge in the coming week, attributing the anticipated breakthrough to leaders including Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, Asim Munir, and Ishaq Dar.

Treasury lawmaker Ahsan Raza said Pakistan’s morale had reached an unprecedented high in its 78-year history, adding that the country had emerged as a global leader due to its current leadership. He claimed that international media was highlighting the role of Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, while asserting that Pakistan’s strategic strength contributed to global peace.

Other members, including Mian Sultan Ali Ranjha, described Pakistan’s global standing as significantly enhanced, crediting the leadership for uniting the nation and projecting strength internationally.

Opposition lawmaker Faisal Javed Khan, while addressing the House, paid tribute to Iran’s stance, invoking historical Islamic references and expressing solidarity.

Several treasury members, including Sumyia Atta Shahani, Rukhsana Shafiq, Fatima Salahuddin, Safia Saeed, and Afshan Waqar Khan, echoed similar sentiments, terming the developments a matter of national pride and praising the leadership for diplomatic achievements and public service initiatives.
