Last week’s rains cause landslides in Murree, Kotli Sattian

RAWALPINDI: After last week’s rains in the upper parts of the country, landsliding occurred at 22 sites in Murree tehsil and 25 in Kotli Sattian.

According to Met Office, more rains are expected from April 16, with chances of landsliding in the upper parts of the country.

The residents of Murree district have therefore demanded the provincial government to make necessary arrangements.

Murree Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Shirazi told Dawn that landsliding had still not ended in Murree, and that the district administration with the help of provincial government departments was on its toes to make arrangements to avoid further damage and provide relief to the affected people.

He said landslides had damaged more than five houses and roads in various parts of Murree, including in Jhikha Gali, and that efforts were underway to repair roads.

He said so far 22 sites in Murree and 25 in Kotli Sattian had been affected by land sliding, adding that officials of the land and revenue as well as Provincial Disaster Management Authority conducted a detailed visit to different areas of Darya Gali.

Mr Shirazi said the district administration reviewed the basic facilities, communication roads, residential houses and potential landslide hazards in the affected areas and he had issued instructions to the relevant agencies to compile an immediate and comprehensive report of the damage while further intensifying relief activities.

Meanwhile, residents of Murree have appealed to the government to take immediate notice of the dangerous landslide risk emerging from the Jhika Gali Chowk remodeling project. According to the residents, the project has already brought several homes to the brink of collapse, while deep cracks had appeared in adjacent lands, posing a severe threat to life.
