The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has claimed responsibility for downing a US military refueling aircraft in western Iraq, Reuters reports.

The group said in a statement it had shot down the KC-135 aircraft “in defense of our country’s sovereignty and airspace”.

In a statement, US Central Command said it is carrying out rescue efforts after the US KC-135 refueling aircraft went down.
