Pipeline augmentation fixes low gas pressure woes in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: The infrastructure upgrades rectify the Sui Gas low-pressure issues in parts of Rawalpindi, as SNGPL has launched a significant programme of network enhancement projects by laying new, larger-diameter distribution pipelines and replacing decades-old lines as part of the system rehabilitation initiative.

The augmentation projects have led to improved supply in various city areas. In several parts of Rawalpindi city and cantonment where consumers were facing acute shortage of gas in winter as well as in summer season, now getting full pressure, with new 18-inch, 16-inch, 12-inch, and 10-inch diameter distribution lines laid to boost supply from both sales metering stations (SMSs) Ranial and Rawat, SNGPL General Manager Masam Ibrar told ‘Dawn’.

SNGPL has completed and commissioned a series of distribution network augmentation projects in Rawalpindi region which involved the commissioning of operational phases, 18 inches over 13.65kms supply line from SMS Ranial to regulating station Siham at a cost of Rs775.15 million; a 12-inch over 7.35 km supply line from Akbar Chowk to Kalma Chowk costing Rs302.78 million, 12 inches on 1km supply line from Kalma Chowk to Harley street at 49.18 million, 16 inches over 6.7kms supply line from SMS Rawat to Amazon Mall GT road at cost of Rs269.2 million and 10 inches over 13.65kms supply line from the old SMS Ranial to 502 Workshop Chowk at Rs399 million.

Furthermore, the modification and de-bottlenecking of Regulating Station (RS) Siham was carried out at a cost of Rs34.04 million to enhance gas pressures in the 12-inch Peshawar Road supply line and 16-inch line in IJP Road.

Project underway to install 63km gas line at cost of Rs10bn to improve supply

Additionally, the laying of a newly approved 10-inch pipeline over 3.5 km from Nazar Chowk to Marrir Chowk, costing Rs127.76 million during the re-modelling of Kutcheri Chowk, is ongoing, and its completion will significantly improve gas supply along Murree Road, explained Mr Ibrar.

The SNGPL official stated that a new project, a 24-inch diameter transmission line, will be laid involving 63.5kms long at cost of Rs10,679 million to augment gas supply to the twin cities. Work is already underway on a 24-inch, 63.5 km transmission line to strengthen the Adhi-Rawat network near Mandra.

SNGPL officials also mentioned that a 12-inch distribution main line is currently awaiting approval to be laid along Murree Road to enhance gas supply to the populous localities on both sides of the Murree Road, which were facing a shortage of gas. The project will be implemented with the start of the widening of Murree Road.

Under the system rehabilitation programme, SNGPL invested Rs526.9 million during fiscal year 2023-24 to replace and disconnect the old, deteriorated network in Rawalpindi city. During fiscal year 2024-25, Rs1,389.4 million was spent to replace 191.3kms old and rusty network in the Rawalpindi Region. Moreover, work is in progress for the rehabilitation of 194.79kms old and rusty underground network at a cost of Rs1,301.94 million.

The general manager remarked that the SNGPL Rawalpindi team is dedicated to resolving the longstanding gas supply issues in Rawalpindi and the surrounding areas. The management is fully backing the team to ensure an uninterrupted and safe supply of gas to consumers.

Furthermore, the AIC office at GHQ, Station Headquarters, city parliamentarians, and district administration are providing full support to SNGPL in resolving the gas supply problems in Rawalpindi.
