KARACHI: The Sindh government on Saturday inaugurated the Special Mohenjo-Daro Train Safari, an initiative aimed at promoting cultural tourism and highlighting the province’s rich historical heritage.
The special train safari was formally inaugurated by Culture and Tourism Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah. He termed the initiative a significant step towards reviving heritage-based tourism and improving public engagement with Sindh’s ancient civilisation.
Carrying more than 100 passengers, the special train left Karachi for Mohenjo-Daro via Sehwan on Saturday morning and reached Larkana via Rohri, Sehwan and Dadu at around 10pm.
According to the schedule, travellers of the special train will visit the historic site of Mohenjo-Daro on Sunday morning and the journey will conclude by Sunday night.
Officials said the per-head cost of the two-day package is Rs25,000, which includes meals, accommodation and a guided tour of the heritage site and museum.
Sindh Tourism Development Corporation (STDC) Managing Director Feyaz Ali Shah told Dawn this was the first time a special tourist train had been launched from Karachi to Larkana to visit Mohenjo-Daro. He added that the response from tourists had been very encouraging and that efforts were being made to further promote tourism in Sindh.
Meanwhile, Minister Zulfiqar Shah said the initiative had received an overwhelming response from residents of Karachi.
“We continued receiving applications late into Friday night, which is why we had to add an extra coach,” he said, calling it evidence of growing public interest in exploring Sindh.
