Pipe work disrupts city water supply
KARACHI: The water supply was interrupted in several neighbourhoods when the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) commenced work to connect a newlyinstalled pipeline at OldPipri to the city’s main water network.
A water utility spokesperson said that the work was being carried out under the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP), which aimed to boost the city’s water distribution capacity and reliability.
He said that work was expected to be completed by Tuesday with the overall operation scheduled to last 96 hours. “During this period, the Old Pipri Pumping Station has been shut down, temporarily suspending water supply from the facility,” he added. However, he said, the New Pipri Pumping Station continues to operate normally, ensuring partial continuity of supply.
Residents in the affected areas were informed that service would be suspended for the duration of the connection, and authorities urged the public to store water accordingly while the project moves forward.
The spokesman said that the ongoing work affected water supply in several areas, including parts of Malir Town, Shah Faisal Town, Model Zone Town and the PIA residential area. The Landhi and Sherpao hydrants have also been closed during the construction period. The KWSC estimates a shortfall of approximately 60 million gallons per day due to the temporary closure.
