HYDERABAD: Activists of different nationalist parties and groups on Tuesday staged a protest demonstration outside the local press club to condemn the passage of 27th amendment.

Several activists were arrested following the protest for violating the Section 144 Cr.PC.

The call for the protest was given by the Sindh Action Committee (SAC) which has been revived only recently at a meeting of like-minded parties held at the residence of Sindh United Party (SUP) chief Syed Zain Shah.

The activists brought out the rally from the Old Campus locality and then converged on the local press club to hold the demonstration. The protest was led by SUP’s Senior Vice President Roshan Buriro, Deedar Sham, Sindh Bar Council member Mir Mangrio, High Court Bar Association (HCBA) general secretary Israr Chang and others.

The participants raised slogans against the 27th Amendment and described it as dangerous for integrity of provinces.

“This amendment is also aimed at usurping resources of provinces and attacking the judiciary,” the leaders said, adding that rulers would get full protection under the amendment.

They said that the 27th Amendment would only make undemocratic forces more powerful. Sindh’s resources would be snatched. Sindh’s lands were already being destroyed through corporate farming and they were sold to the corporate sector at throwaway prices, they claimed.

They said that earlier, citizens’ right to expression was snatched through the 26th Amendment and now through the 27th one, dictatorship was being imposed. They said that the PPP, “which is a product of undemocratic forces”, was part and parcel of this exercise. They vowed to continue their struggle against all such moves.

During the protest, a heavy contingent of Cantonment police arrived at the venue and rounded up at least 15 activists for violating Section 144 Cr.PC. They included Abdul Sami Chandio and Shaukat.

The leaders then gathered in the bar association’s office to review the situation after the police action. They decided to block a section of the National Highway for their immediate release.

Later, following a contact between SSP Adeel Chandio and Israr Chang, the detained activists were let off.
