ATC blocks Aleema’s CNIC, freezes accounts over ‘no-show’

RAWALPINDI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Friday directed the authorities to block the identity card and passport of Aleema Khan, sister of PTI founder Imran Khan, after she failed to appear before the court despite the execution of a non-bailable arrest warrant.

ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah issued the order while hearing a case related to the PTI’s protest on November 26 last year, during which several party leaders, including Aleema Khan, were booked under terrorism and other offences.

During the proceedings, the judge observed that Aleema Khan had been “appearing everywhere except the courtroom,” saying that her presence before the court would now be ensured through coercive measures.

The court directed the National Database and Registration Authority director general and the directorate general of Immigration and Passports to block her CNIC and passport. The State Bank of Pakistan was also instructed to freeze all of her bank accounts, while her guarantor’s property was ordered to be forfeited to the state.

The directives followed repeated non-compliance with earlier summons and warrants. The latest non-bailable arrest warrant, issued on October 22, was executed a day earlier when Punjab Sub-Divisional Police Officer Azhar Shah presented the warrant before an Islamabad High Court bench and obtained Aleema Khan’s signature on the spot.

The court has issued at least four non-bailable arrest warrants for Aleema Khan in the case. On October 22, it also served show-cause notices on two police officers for submitting what it described as a “fabricated and misleading” report claiming that she was in hiding, despite video footage showing her addressing media persons outside Adiala jail the previous evening.
