LONDON: On the eve of his departure for Pakistan, the Prime Minister, Mr Liaquat Ali Khan… told [Dawn’s London representative] that he was satisfied that his visit to the United States had been a success and that the Americans were now becoming increasingly aware of Pakistan. … The Prime Minister disclosed that he had had no discussions in Washington about any defence of Iranian border, or assignment of bases in Pakistan to American armed forces.

He was referring to some recent reports in the British Press alleging these developments to which [the representative] had drawn his attention. Such conjectures about bases in Pakistan, Mr Liaquat Ali Khan declared, “have no basis”. — London representative [Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies at the Korean front,] the [US] forces lost the rail centre of Chonan, 36 miles north of Taejon, to the Northerners today [July 8] after a day of panicky retreat and a night of heroic battle. It was a story of chaos, confusion, Communist tanks and frightened American soldiers.

The operation began yesterday. The Ame­ricans had withdrawn 30 miles in two previous days to new positions south of Chonan.
