FIA obtains remand of CIA officer, two SHOs in torture case
HYDERABAD: The civil judge and judicial magistrate-II has granted a three-day remand of Thatta CIA In-charge Mumtaz Brohi in FIA custody.
Brohi has been accused of beating up the Taluka Chairman of Mirpur Sakro Iqbal Ahmed Khaskheli and his colleague Mohammad Yusuf Shaheen.
The FIA has also booked two SHOs of Thatta district police, Mukhtair Ali Kalhoro and Athar Ali Channa, in the same case.
FIA Assistant Director Zubair Yusufani has confirmed grant of remand. He also mentioned that the names of the SHOs were incorporated in the FIR in the light of statement of Khaskheli.
As per statements of complainants / applicants, CIA In-charge Brohi and SHOs Mukhtair Ali Kalhoro and Athar Ali Channa came to police lines where they (applicants) were waiting for criminal record office (CRO) verification on April 27.
The complainants told the FIA investigating officer that the three police officials maltreated them and shifted them to CIA Centre blindfolded.
Iqbal Khaskheli said they were unlawfully confined to a room. Mumtaz Brohi caused injuries to him (Iqbal Khaskheli) with batons arranged by the SHOs; his left hand bone was fractured when he tried to protect himself.
Iqbal fell on the ground due to continuous torture and SHO Athar Channa put him in his black-colour vehicle (bearing registration number LE 0173) to shift him to some unknown destination.
Yusuf alleged that he was taken to the Makli police station where he was beaten up by Kalhoro during his illegal custody. His finger of right hand also fractured, he added.
They said that on April 28, they were remanded into judicial custody by JM-I Thatta in case No. 71/2025, 72/205 and 73/25 of the Makli police station. They complained about maltreatment in custody. The magistrate had directed the IO to get them medically examined but he didn’t comply with his April 28 order. Then on May 25, the court noted in its order that the IO willfully failed to comply with said order and didn’t produce the accused for medical examination. The court transferred the investigation to the FIA Hyderabad on a plea filed by the two applicants.
Incorporating facts narrated by the applicants, FIA’s IO Zubair Akbar Yousfani registered an FIR against Mumtaz Brohi, SHOs Mukhtiar Kalhoro and Athar Ali Channa, ASI Munawar Ali Palijo.
