Girl dies after falling into sewage drain

HYDERABAD: A young girl died after she and her friend fell into an uncovered sewage drain in Talab No.3 area on Wednesday evening. The victim’s friend was, however, rescued.

10-year-old Rabail, daughter of Wajid Detho and eight-year-old Paree­sha, daughter of Ali slipped into the drain while playing near it as the drain did not have protective walls. Rabail fell first and then Pareesha. The two were rescued by the locality residents and taken to Liaquat University Hospital where Rabail died before getting medical help.

The victims were said to be residents of Allah Dad Chand Goth. Earlier, A seven-year-old boy had died after falling into a drain in Old Sabzi Mandi area on May 17.

MQM’s Sindh Assembly member Rashid Khan said that these drains had become ‘wells of death’ which were devouring children.

He said in his statement that inquiry should be conducted as to where the funds of municipal bodies were being used.

He visited the bereaved family and offered condolences.

He said that protective walls of the drains remai­ned missing at various locations and Hyderabad Municipal Corporation was not repairing them.
