RAWALPINDI: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is likely to inaugurate Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road and GPO Underpass on The Mall after Eidul Azha.

Earlier, the chief minister was expected to inaugurate the flyover on Tuesday but the programme was canceled due to her engagements in Lahore. It was therefore decided that both projects will be inaugurated on the same day after Eidul Azha.

The construction of Nawaz Sharif Flyoverat Khawaja Corporation Chowk, Adiala Road, was launched in January at a cost of Rs2.113 billion to resolve traffic issues. After completion of the flyover, a total of 79,000 vehicles will benefit.

The total length of the flyoveris 1,915 feet. It is 52 feet wide and its total height is 16.75 feet.

AdialaRoadis an important access roadto the mega Ring Road project. City managers are working on widening the road and making it signal free. About eight kanals and 11.5 marlas of land has been acquired for the Khawaja Corporation Flyoveron AdialaRoad at the cost of Rs317.623 million.

As many as 72 underground piles have been completed while 49 concrete girders of 97 feet long, six feet high and three feet wide were used for the bridge.

On the other hand, GPO Double Barrel Underpass on The Mall is one kilometre long and is being constructed at the cost of Rs4.6 billion from TM Chowk in front of GHQ to Military Hospital. It is part of the Punjab government’s plan to make TheMallsignal-free. The underpasswill benefit approximately 250,000 vehicles. Due to frequent traffic jams, people had been facing difficulties.

Meanwhile, on the directions of the Punjab chief minister, Provincial Minister for Works and Communications Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth reviewed the ongoing development work in Rawalpindi.

He made a detailed visit to the Nawaz Sharif Flyover on Adiala Road and GPO Chowk Underpass in Rawalpindi and also reviewed preparations for the inauguration of both projects.

The provincial minister was briefed by the relevant authorities regarding the completion of the Nawaz Sharif Flyover. It was informed in the briefing that the flyover had been completed in a record period of 120 days.

Speaking on the occasion, Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth said: “Nawaz Sharif Flyover is a gift from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to the citizens of Rawalpindi. Providing quality travel facilities to the people is the priority of the chief minister.”

The provincial minister later visited the GPO Chowk Underpass and reviewed the pace and quality of work. The relevant authorities briefed the provincial minister on the construction of the underpass.

Speaking on the occasion, Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth said construction work of the GPO Chowk Underpass was progressing rapidly, and the underpass will help in improving traffic flow. All resources are being utilised to complete development projects on time, he added.
