WHILE Eidul Azha is one of the significant religious festivals, lack of proper waste management gives rise to challenges in terms of health risk and hygiene. It is observed that after Eid, animal waste is left largely unattended at public places, leading to health risks, environmental pollution and disruption in daily life.

The improper disposal of offal causes vectorborne and waterborne diseases by attracting rodents, mosquitoes and flies. Pedestrians face hurdles due to the accumulation of waste on sidewalks and streets.

Moreover, the absence of designated slaughterhouses forces people to sacrifice animals at public places which can contribute to water pollution and soil degradation besides being a source of foul smell all around.

Karachi has made significant progress over the last few years in terms of waste disposal, but due to shortage of facilities and inadequate management, the matter still complicates people’s lives.

The relevant authorities should develop strategies for the proper disposal of waste. The authorities need to organise timely collection of waste, establish designated areas for proper disposal, and arrange incineration of the waste. Besides, people should also be educated about cleanliness and waste disposal.
