NEW DELHI: The Chogyal of the ancient Himalayan Kingdom of Sikkim was officially “under the protection of Indian troops” today [April 10] after they had forcibly disarmed the palace guard in a ... clash last night. The military action seems to have been timed with a resolution passed later today by the State legislature asking India to abolish kingship, radio reports said. Last night, a Swedish amateur radio operator in Stockholm, had reported he overheard a conversation from Asia which indicated that Indian troops had invaded Sikkim. ... The Chogyal, who was reduced to a titular Head of State ... last year when his country was made an “associate state” of India, has said India has virtually annexed Sikkim.
