HYDERABAD: Speakers at different programs held in Hyderabad, Larkana and Mirpurkhas to mark the International Women’s Day on Saturday demanded occupational safety for women farm workers, creation of jobs for women and promotion of gender equality in workplaces and communities.

In Hyderabad, over 70 women farm workers held an ‘assembly’ to demand climate justice and occupational safety in agriculture sector as they observed the women’s day organised by Sindh Community Foundation in collaboration with Commonwealth Foundation.

The assembly voiced concerns over unfair wages, unsafe working conditions and growing impact of climate change on their livelihoods.

The assembly called for urgent action by stakeholders to protect wellbeing of women farm workers.

It highlighted urgent need for systemic reforms to address pressing issues and called on policymakers to take immediate action to ensure a safer and more equitable future for women farm workers.

In Larkana, SZABIST University celebrated International Women’s Day which featured a panel discussion focusing on equal opportunities, breaking stereotypes and fostering inclusivity.

Dr Zahida Abro, head of the university, highlighted the resilience of Pakistani women and the need for equal opportunities, especially for marginalised communities. The university reaffirmed her commitment to empowering women through academic initiatives, she said.

In Mirpurkhas, scores of women held a demonstration under the banner of Sindh Mazdoor Ittihad’s women wing outside local press club to mark the International Women’s Day.

The Ittihad leaders condemned the government for its failure to provide jobs and advised it to establish factories and cottage industries to create jobs for women.

They pledged to promote gender equality in workplaces and communities and called for action, urging all members of society to champion gender inclusivity.
