Debut counselling centre set up at Kohat varsity
KOHAT: The debut counseling centre, a state-of-the-art facility for mental well-being of students, was inaugurated at the Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) here on Wednesday.
The inaugural ceremony was held under the auspices of the psychology department in collaboration with the district youth office.
KUST Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammad Naseeruddin, deputy commissioner Abdul Akram and assistant commissioner Nimra Owais were also present.
A large number of students, psychologists and professionals from various educational and social sectors participated in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Naseeruddin termed the initiative by KUST a step towards improving students’ mental stability, and said it was also a significant effort to enhance their academic performance and quality of life.
“A healthy mind is the key to success, and we are committed to providing all necessary support to our students,” he added.
He said that it was a debut milestone in the university’s academic development that would foster their personal growth and overall success.
“This initiative reaffirms KUST’s commitment to creating a supportive and nurturing educational environment where students can thrive academically, socially and emotionally,” he said.
On the occasion, the deputy commissioner said KUST’s initiative would serve as a model and a beacon for other universities to follow and ensure that students received mental health awareness and support.
He added educational institutions should not only be the centres of learning but also hubs for personality development and mental growth.
Students performed on stage, demonstrating various mental health challenges, and proposing practical solutions, making the session both informative and engaging.
During the ceremony, mental health experts highlighted the growing need for psychological support in educational institutions. They emphasised that academic pressure, social challenges, and personal struggles were causing increased mental issues among students.
Dr Asif Ali, in-charge of the centre for human resource and career development at KUST, said that the centre aimed to provide psychological support, address academic and social challenges. “It was designed to help students overcome stress-related issues, and secure a healthier and more productive educational experience.”
Students welcomed the Initiative and viewed it as a much-needed support system for their mental well-being.
One student shared, “Many students suffer from stress and anxiety but have no platform to discuss their problems openly.
This centre inspires hope that will help us address our psychological challenges.”
