SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: Rescue 1122 firefighters on Friday managed to put out a raging fire that broke out in Sararogha area of Upper South Waziristan district on Thursday, engulfing an approximately eight kilometres area and posing a significant threat to the nearby populations.

Tribesmen said the fire destroyed hundreds of oak and olive trees.

Officials said that a two-day effort by the firefighters ended in a success, preventing the fire from spreading further.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, according to a Rescue 1122 spokesman. He said the incident was part of a larger trend, as wildfires have become commonplace in the mountains of Upper and Lower South Waziristan districts over the past two years, resulting in significant losses to the region’s precious tree cover.
