Policeman held over ‘sacrilegious’ remarks
BATTAGRAM: The police have arrested a constable after he was charged by a cleric with hurting religious feelings of Muslims through his comments on social media.
The arrested suspect is also charged with the offence of ‘uttering derogatory remarks about holy personages.’
DSP Sajid Nawaz told Dawn that they arrested the suspect after an FIR was registered against him under different sections of Pakistan Penal Code, including 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 298A (use of derogatory remarks about holy personages) and 153A (promotion of disharmony, enmity or feelings of hatred or ill-will between different religious, racial, linguistic, or regional groups or castes or communities).
Complainant in the case is Mufti Mohammad Fayaz, who in his written complaint stated that on social media he along with other persons watched objectionable material disrespecting the companions of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that hurt his and other Muslims’ religious sentiments.
