Power protesters block Indus Highway

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: The residents of Shorkot here on Tuesday staged a protest demonstration against unscheduled power loadshedding.

They set on fire old tyres and blocked the main Indus Highway to traffic coming from Peshawar and other areas to Dera Ismail Khan and Sindh.

A large number of women also participated in the protest. The protesters chanted slogans against Pesco authorities for subjecting them to prolonged power outages in the hot weather.

They called upon the government to take immediate measures to reduce the duration of loadshedding otherwise they would continue the protest.

Later, local police and Pesco officials held talked with protesters and convinced them to open Indus Highway to traffic.

POLIO: Deputy Commissioner Mansoor Arshad has said that administration is utilising all available resources to eradicate polio.

He expressed these views during a meeting with Unicef chief national security adviser John Robert on Tuesday at the commissioner’s office. Field security officer Naveed Akhtar Khan Afridi was also present on the occasion.

The deputy commissioner gave a detailed briefing to the Unicef official about efforts for polio eradication, security challenges and other issues. He said that all possible arrangements were being made to achieve the targets.

John Robert appreciated the efforts of the administration and police, assuring full cooperation from Unicef in that regard.

He emphasised that polio eradication was need of the day.

He added that all resources would be utilised to completely eradicate polio.
