From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1949: Seventy-five years ago: Electric scheme extended

PESHAWAR: Sir Ambrose Dundas, Governor of the NWFP, switched over the new transmission of the first extension of the Malakand hydro-electric scheme linking up the power supply with the West Punjab at 11 a.m. today [May 1]. The historic inauguration ceremony, attended by the Governors of the West Punjab and the NWFP, marked the beginning of a series of extensions of the various hydro-electric schemes in the NWFP for power supply to towns and villages of the West Punjab. The new extension will supply power to the Wah Cement Works bringing substantial reduction in import of coal and also electricity to 88 West Punjab and NWFP towns and villages which so far have been without electricity. — News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies in Calcutta,] the Premiers of West Bengal and East Pakistan, Dr B.C. Roy and Mr Nurul Amin, met in conference in Calcutta today [May 1] to consider the question of the outstanding obligations of undivided Bengal. Claims in respect of these obligations are outstanding before the applications Committee set up by the two Governments.
