People can be helped in a humane manner

THIS is with reference to several letters in these columns about the rising prices of food items during the holy month of Ramazan in Pakistan, putting extra burden on families already struggling financially. Additionally, a huge rush of people can be seen outside Utility Stores and the designated banks where they gather in the hope of getting financial relief announced by the government.

When I compared the situation with what happens in Canada, where I presently live, I thought why the government in Pakistan is not learning from other states the plan and procedure to extend relief to the people. Maybe this letter, if it reaches some responsible government officials, can give them food for thought to implement a plan and proce- dure to provide relief to the people in a dignified and honourable way.

During the outbreak of Covid, Canada had announced financial relief for deserving Canadians. The relief, consisting of Covid relief, grocery rebate, additional payment towards general sales tax (GST), etc., was paid to them through direct bank deposit, since government organisations have complete data about citizens registered with them, including bank account details of Canadians from their income tax returns.

There was no need to visit any bank or utility store. The details of payment were sent to individuals through post. In a few cases, the letters were sent by the prime minister of the province (equivalent to chief minister) with his signature.

In order to provide genuine relief to people, Pakistan government should chalk out a programme, where the people are not required to go through immense hardship and the relief to them is provided in a humane, if not dignified, manner.
