Malaysia’s oldest political party has announced a donation of 1 million ringgit ($211,694) to assist Palestinians in Gaza, Al Jazeera reports.

The United Malays National Organization (UNMO), which is part of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government, said the donation would be channelled through the non-profit Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organization.

Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed hope that the donation would be a help to Palestinians as they observe Ramadan.

“Currently, we can see in the media, that our brothers and sisters in Palestine are going through severe suffering and difficulties due to the brutality of the Zionist army,” he said in a post on Facebook on Saturday.

“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the contributors, especially UMNO members. May Allah reward those involved as much as possible and I pray that every donation will benefit the Palestinian people as much as possible.”
