NAWABSHAH: Protest against death of prisoner

NAWABSHAH, March 5: Relatives of an under-trial prisoner, who died apparently of fatal injuries while in custody, staged a protest demonstration in front of the local press club on Sunday alleging police involvement in the death.

The protesters, carrying the body with them, blocked the road to the club and raised slogans against police. They later dispersed peacefully after DPO Sarwar Jamali, DCO Razzaq Qureshi and District Naib Nazim Abdul Haq Jamali assured them of bringing culprits to justice.

Tanveer Katiar, 25, was arrested by police along with his uncle Abdul Ghani in a theft case and was sent to district jail on Feb 23 by judicial magistrate.

Tanveer was later shifted from jail to the PMCH on Feb 28 with illness and injuries.

Family members alleged that Tanveer had died of police torture.

They demanded that police officials involved in the murder should be suspended.
