Orange line train turns three

LAHORE: The Orange Line Metro Train completed three years of its operation on Wednesday, proving a reliable means of transportation for up to 120 million passengers since the commercial launch of the project on Oct 25, 2020.

Punjab Minister for Transport Ibrahim Murad extended his gratitude to China for its contribution to the project, marking the completion of three years of the metro train’s operation.

He commended the dedicated employees who have been instrumental in the success of the Orange train, stating it stands as a prime example of accessible public transportation and a testament to the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China.

Over the past three years, a staggering 120 million individuals have benefited from the train, considering it a reliable mode of transportation.

Mr Murad said that the projects like the metro train show that the Pakistan-China friendship is rooted in a shared vision rather than individual gain.

He appreciated China’s role in Pakistan’s progress, particularly in areas such as agriculture, livestock, power, and infrastructure development. “This friendship is exemplified at the grassroots level.”

He also lauded China’s investment in various projects creating employment opportunities for thousands of Pakistanis.

The OLMT accommodates around 250,000 passengers daily, with an approximate subsidy of Rs8 billion being allocated for its operation.

He said the government is also considering to extend free travel facility to the disabled and elderly citizens, following the provision of the same for students.

Mr Murad said the government is also planning, in collaboration with China, to introduce eco-friendly transportation system, including electric buses in Lahore and the expansion of the Orange Line Train project to other major cities.
