CANCER is a deadly disease that has become a major concern for the people of Balochistan. With each passing year, the number of cancer patients in the province is increasing, which should be a matter of great concern for the health authorities.

According to recent reports, cancer in the province has increased by 30 per cent in the last fi ve years. In Awaran district, there have been multiple cancer-related cases in a short span of time. This alarming increase in cancer cases is attributed to several factors, including the lack of awareness, use of tobacco, consumption of unhealthy food, and exposure to harmful chemicals.

Many people in the province are not aware of the risk factors associated with cancer, and, as a result, they do not take necessary precautions to protect themselves.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), tobacco is responsible for various types of cancers, including lung, throat and mouth cancer. In Balochistan, the use of tobacco is widespread, and many people, including young adults and children, are addicted to it.

The province is known for its oily cuisine, which is high in fat, sugar and salt. The excessive consumption of such foods is linked to several types of cancers, including colon, breast, and prostate cancer.

Moreover, the people in Balochistan are exposed to harmful chemicals owing to unregulated industrial activities. The lack of proper safety measures in industries has led to the release of hazardous chemicals into the environment, which is a significant risk factor for cancer.

The government and health authorities must take urgent measures to address the issue of cancer in Balochistan. The first step in this regard is to create awareness among the people about the risk factors associated with the disease and the preventive measures that can be taken.

The government should also invest in cancer treatment facilities and equipment in the province. Currently, there are only a few cancer treatment facilities, and they are mostly located in the major cities. The lack of adequate facilities forces cancer patients to travel long distances to receive treatment, which is a significant financial burden and adds to the physical and mental stress of patients’ families.
