11 foreigners ascend Broad Peak

GILGIT: Eleven members of a foreign expedition successfully summited Broad Peak (8,051 metres) on Sunday morning.

The team comprised Norwegian woman Kristin Harila, Gabriel Tarso from Brazil, Flutura Ibrahimi from Kosovo, Josette Valloton from Switzerland, and Tenjen Sherpa, Nima Rinji Sherpa, Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, Mingtema Sherpa, Ngima Tashi Sherpa, Nuri Sherpa and Mingtemba Sherpa, all from Nepal,

They reached the top of the peak at 4.30am on Sunday.

Sunday’s feat holds added significance for Kristin Harila and Tenjen Sherpa as they have now ascended 13 peaks, out of 14, standing at over 8,000 metres.

Harila’s next mission is to scale K2, the world’s second tallest peak at 8,611 metres, on July 27.

Norwegian climber Kristin Harila, photographer Gabriel Tarso from Brazil, Nepal’s Tenjen Sherpa, Nepal’s Ming Temba Sherpa and Yousuf Ali of Pakistan had ascended Gasherbrum-I (8,080m) on July 18.

On July 15, three climbers, Kristin Harila, Nepal’s Tenjen Sherpa and Mingtemba Sherpa, summited Gasherbrum-II.

On July 3, Kristin Harila climbed Nanga Parbat (8,126m).

Mission K2

Over 200 foreign climbers began a mission to ascend K2 on Sunday despite treacherous weather conditions.

They aim to reach the summit of K2 on July 26 or 27.

“It has been raining at the base camp since morning. The savage mountain is covered by clouds. But we hope mother nature will relent and hopefully we’ll summit K2 on July 26 or 27,” the team said in a statement.
