Civil society to hold climate march tomorrow
KARACHI: Civil society organisations and activists are organising a climate march on Sunday (tomorrow) to create public awareness about the city’s environmental destruction, largely caused by poor governance and ill-planned mega development projects including Bahria Town, DHA City and Malir Expressway.
Speaking at a press briefing, activists representing different non-profit organisations and environmental groups said it was time to raise voice for the city’s growing environmental destruction.
They said Karachi even lacked clean drinking water and efficient system for sewerage, drainage and solid waste disposal for the past many decades. And as a result of this, the city had turned into one of the world’s ugliest and unsafe cities.
The speakers highlighted how old villages and the city’s greenbelt was ruined by projects like Bahria Town and Malir Expressway that is being developed to connect the DHA to the DHA City.
Persistent institutional failure and deteriorating living conditions had also made the city vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, they added.
